Watchmen

Love it or hate it, Watchmen is worth seeing

Captain America punched Hitler on a comic book cover. Superman threatened the Fuhrer with a "strictly non-Aryan sock on your jaw." That's as safely political as our spandex heroes get, which is why it's a shock here to see Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup) and the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, a charmer, here meaty and lethal) lay waste to a field of Viet Cong, incinerating and blasting them one terrified fighter at a time. Audiences will flock to this cynical juggernaut—some to love it, some to try to hate it—and all will leave feeling they've had An Experience.

This is a nice interview guys, read it at the author's website.

INTERVIEW WITH WATCHMEN ACTORS MALIN AKERMAN AND JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN
Written by Matthew Pejkovic
http://www.mattsmoviereviews.net/spotlight%20akerman%20morgan%20watchmen.html

A couple of weeks back, I was fortunate enough to interview actors Malin Akerman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who were in Sydney to promote their new film, the ambitious comic book adaptation, Watchmen.

Regardless of my being the last interviewee of a 12 hour day filled with countless interviews and media appearances, both Akerman and Morgan were a courteous and extremely down to earth pair, who were more than happy to chat about the themes and controversies surrounding their new film.

Zach Snyder Impresses

From CHUD's Devin Faraci

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTERVIEW: ZACK SNYDER (WATCHMEN)
See the video here: http://chud.com/articles/articles/18232/1/EXCLUSIVE-VIDEO-INTERVIEW-ZACK-SNYDER-WATCHMEN/Page1.html

Zack Snyder isn't who you think he is. He's not the slomo-loving frat boy. He's not the guy making Watchmen into a dumb action movie. He's not the guy caught up in the surface aspects of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' graphic novel, missing everything else underneath.

Zack Snyder is the guy who did what I thought was totally impossible: he made Watchmen into a movie that is remarkably faithful to the book - in tone, theme, character and incident - while also making it his own movie. The only people who could question whether or not Snyder 'got' the material are the people who haven't seen the movie, a movie that is an awe-inspiring achievement that will forever change the way people look at Zack Snyder and his films. The idea that he's just a guy who does speed ramping is blown away forever; the thought that the 'visionary' tag Warner Bros is using on all their advertising is hyperbole disappears.

I sat down with Zack this morning. This is what we talked about. There are spoilers for those who have not read the book.

Much of the information in this interview we've seen before, but Miller sems to like Jeff very much, and it's always nice to see people comment on what a nice person Jeff is. There are also a couple of tidbits from the set about Jeff's training activities!

New pics. New interview.

There's a nice interview with Jeff here: http://www.moviehole.net/200917833-exclusive-interview-jeffrey-dean-morgan It's a bit broader in range than just The Comedian, even though it's part of the Watchmen press junket.

The Losers character info

From Wikipedia, here are character sketches of the major players. Read the rest of the article here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Losers_(Vertigo)

Warning for spoilers-

* Clay - The Leader, easily identified by a consistent use of black suits without ties. Commonly referred to as 'the Colonel,' perhaps alluding to his rank prior to the team's "death." A meticulous planner, initiative-taker and an excellent leader, Clay harbors the largest grudge against Max, at times appearing visibly angry at the mention of his name.

....like this look, or a touch more 'military' perhaps? This pic is from Days of Wrath.

* Roque - The second-in-command, easily identified by the large, vertical scar down the right side of his face and icy demeanor. His ruthless thirst for money motivates a majority of his actions, including the serial betrayal of the Losers and many of his underlings.
* Jensen - The hacker, characterized by his spiky blonde hair, glasses and a conspicuous beard on his chin. Known for his nonstop motormouth that often leads him into trouble and a variety of conversational tangents.
* Cougar - The sniper, identified by his cowboy hat and haunted demeanor. Morose and laconic as a result of a traumatic combat incident in Afghanistan. An absolute genius with the rifle.
* Pooch - The pilot, identifiable by his shaved head and laid-back appearance, has been known to pilot any ground, air or sea vehicle with ease. Despite his involvement with the CIA and Special Forces, is also married with children.
* Aisha - The loose cannon, identified by her eyebrow piercing and tied-back hair. Partners with the Losers in light of their common goal of killing Max. Skilled in all combat skills, with particular emphasis on melee and reconnaissance, stemming from a harsh upbringing in Afghanistan and Pakistan, primarily fighitng as a child against Soviet soldiers during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. A cold-blooded killer who prefers to leave corpses rather than survivors when she engages the enemy.
* Max - An enigmatic man wielding unprecedented, covert influence over various governmental and military institutions. Organized the assassination of Aisha's father, a slave trader and local warlord, and the subsequent "accident" of the Losers when they went off-mission. Although the current Max enjoys substantial influence over the CIA and infamy throughout the Black Ops community, the "Max" codename predates the CIA itself by several years.
* Robert Sanderson - Deputy Director of Operations, CIA. Originally assigned to negotiate with the Losers during an intense standoff, Sanderson comes to realize the true motives and identity of Max, whom he initially regards as an expired decoy identity "used to lure enemy agents out of hiding." Sanderson recruits Marvin Stegler to conduct a clandestine intra-Agency investigation of the MAX identity.
* Marvin Stegler - A veteran CIA agent who as of late has been relegated to desk work. Although initially ordered to investigate the Max identity, Stegler frequently crosses paths with the Losers and comes to offer Agency support to them after he stops receiving orders from Sanderson.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan's addition to cast "creates buzz"

‘The Losers’ Adds ‘Watchmen’ Actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan To Cast

Jeffrey Dean Morgan in 'Watchmen'Back in November, we brought you the news that Sylvain White was bringing the DC/Vertigo series “The Losers” to the big screen. White’s deal didn’t cause a lot of buzz at the time, and the trades were confused as to whether it was the 1970s DC series, or the 2004 DC/Vertigo series that was being adapted. Late last year, producer Joel Silver seemed unsure as to when or if the film would really take off, noting that “The Losers” faced competition from a remake of “The Dirty Dozen.”

Look for the buzz to change now, as Variety reports that Jeffrey Dean Morgan has signed on to star as the head “Loser” for Warner Bros. And the film is indeed based on the 2004 “reimagining” series by DC/Vertigo, according to the report.

“The Losers” centered on a Special Forces team who were betrayed by their C.I.A. handler, Max. The team (nicknamed The Losers) is left for dead following a mission, and after a narrow escape, they vow revenge. They dodge C.I.A. plots, attempt to get their name off the secret “death list,” and uncover more of Max’s shocking plots and conspiracies that extend throughout the U.S. government.

It hasn’t been announced what “Loser” Morgan will play* or how closely the film will follow the books, but we’re going to guess he’s playing Clay, The Leader. Not only is he the man with all the initiative, but he hates Max more than anyone else. A good choice for the former Comedian — can we now assume that “Watchmen” and “The Losers” has made Morgan a DC fan?

*This story was pretty much all OVER the net yesterday, and most other sources claim that Jeff's role IS "Clay".

Jeffrey Dean Morgan on fire!

Watchmen's Comedian Almost Perished In Flames
By Meredith Woerner, 8:00 AM on Fri Feb 20 2009
http://io9.com/5157070/watchmens-comedian-almost-perished-in-flames

Where the Comedian goes, murder and mayhem follow close behind. So it's only right that the actor portraying this masked sadist, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, almost set himself and the entire Watchmen set ablaze.

We talked to Morgan about his work on Watchmen, and here's what he had to say.

How did you like The Comedian's costume?

It was hard to move in, it was hard to get into, [and] it was hard to get out of. But that being said, when I got in it and stuck a cigar in my mouth... yeah... I wanted to kill people right away.

Did you have previous experience with weapons?

I got to go to the firing range quite a few times. It was a blast. I loved that part of it... There was a flame thrower range in the warehouse, that was a trip... The day that I did the scene where I have to keep the flame on this guy for ten seconds, do a ten count in your head, which is an exceedingly long time to pointing a flame thrower at some guy who has a little gel on him. You're just nailing him with these flames, and I kept pulling up early. I thought I'm going to really hurt this guy and I can't deal with that. And Zack's like, "Do it again man, and you're enjoying this too."

I kept having to redo it because I was pulled up. And I'm smiling and having my little moment but, so finally the last time I did it, I held it on this guy, but in the mean time I'd done it so many times that the rice paddy had been covered with gasoline from shooting this thing. So I'm burning this guy up and I do it and I'm like, "yeah you fucking bastard," and I look down and there's flames coming at me, and it comes right up my leg and there's no one near me. I'm in the middle of a rice paddy. And I look up and I see Zack and his eyes are this big [makes big circles over his eyes] and all I can think is "I can't ruin the costume."

The guys did so much work on the costume and I thought I'm just going to have to put it out myself. It was a nightmare [laughs]. They're imperfect heroes. I kept the cigar lit the whole time, I just sucking on that.

Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach) interrupts:
Rorschach would have been like "27, 28..." [Laughs]

Was it difficult for you taking on the role of this character? Did you go method with it a little?

I'm not a method actor. I always take kind of pride in the fact that when it's time to turn it on, you turn it on, and when it's time to go home at night, you know walk your dog and enjoy your life. But there are a couple of things that I do - that The Comedian does - that certainly wasn't easy to walk away from. They certainly stuck with me. There were a couple sleepless nights. Filming this was a lot harder than I ever anticipated when I first got the role.

It was a lot harder, and Jack [Earle Haley] said something earlier about being isolated. I did the same. We both sort of isolated ourselves from everybody while we were shooting this. It seemed to make more sense in the process. It was a long shoot. It was a great shoot and I loved it, and I loved playing this guy, but the day I got to go home and be rid of him, was not bad. I was tired.

Watchmen will be in theaters on March 6.

Watchmen: Who's Watching The Watchmen?

From the moment we see The Comedian's blood streak across his seventies Happy Face button, we know that the movie version of Watchmen and its caretakers were going to be as respectful as possible to the vision of the original comic miniseries. Based on one of the most collected and memorable comic book runs in history, the movie Watchmen tries to be all things cosmic and ambiguously moral to all of us unactualized and imperfect people, and it succeeds on most fronts. But unlike the thought-provoking Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, and John Higgins 1986 creation that demanded one's imagination stretch beyond a page of panels, this thoroughly-engaging incarnation of Warner's DC Comics property attempts to achieve that level of examination through a more stylized, literal approach.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a LOSER?

WATCHMEN's Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a LOSER

Jeffrey Dean Morgan hot off his turn as The Comedian in Zack Snyder's WATCHMEN, is in negotiations to sign onto THE LOSERS from WB.
The Hollywood Reporter had the news, The "Watchmen" star is in negotiations to board another comic book project, "The Losers," from Warner Bros. and Silver Pictures.

Sylvain White is directing the adaptation of the Vertigo book, which follows a special forces team betrayed by their handler and left for dead. The Losers regroup in the interest of revenge and the opportunity to remove their names from a secret CIA death list and to conduct covert operations against the CIA and its interests.

Morgan would play Clay, the group's leader, whose signature look favors black suits without ties.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan on playing The Comedian

Interview: Watchmen's Comedian - Jeffrey Dean Morgan
February 19, 2009
by Alex Billington

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian

Of all the people involved in Watchmen, the one actor I really wanted to interview was Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays The Comedian. Not only is he a great guy in person (I've met him before), but his character is one of the darkest and most complex in the entire movie. Yesterday afternoon I sat down with him to talk about Watchmen and what it's like being a part of something so incredible. And because we're all very excited about Watchmen, I thought I'd put up my video interview for your viewing pleasure. Be careful, this isn't exactly spoiler free, but it should be a fascinating interview to watch - at least I think so!

For those who haven't read the graphic novel, The Comedian might possibly be the most conflicted character of the story. There is a lot of insight to be gained from this interview after having seen the movie as well, primarily because you'll understand his take on the character so much more. I hope you enjoy!

There's a bit more from Alex after the interview, which you can read here:
